چکیده

A general use of the adaptive optics requires an artificial guide star created by focusing a laser beam tuned to the sodium D2 line. We propose here a system to monitor the column density of the mesospheric sodium layer which is based on the sodium magneto-optical filter already widely used in solar observations. The principal characteristics of this system are high transmission and high spectral resolution which allow to perform measurements in minutes on a relatively small (e.g. 50 cm diameter) telescope, where the filter can easily mounted due to its compactness.

Atmospheric Sodium Column Density Monitoring

In Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (AO), a laser is used to excite the mesospheric (90km altitude) sodium (Na) layer and thereby creates an artiicial star that can be used as reference for the AO wavefront sensor. The intensity of the created star depends strongly on the amount of Na present in the atmosphere. Experiences to measure the column density and details of excitation of scattering pr...

Measuring the Absolute Height and Profile of the Mesospheric Sodium Layer using a Continuous Wave Laser

We have developed and tested a novel method, based on LIDAR, of measuring the height and profile of the mesospheric sodium layer using a continuous wave laser. It is more efficient than classical LIDAR as the laser is on for 50% of the time, and so can in principle be used during laser guide star adaptive optics observations. It also has significant advantages over direct imaging techniques bec...

High-resolution lidar observations of mesospheric sodium and implications for adaptive optics.

Observations of sodium density variability in the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere, obtained using a high-resolution lidar system, show rapid fluctuations in the sodium centroid altitude. The temporal power spectrum extends above 1 Hz and is well-fit by a power law having a slope that is -1.95±0.12. These fluctuations produce focus errors in adaptive optics systems employing continuous-wave ...

Modeling Laser Guide Star Aberrations

When using a laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics system, quasi-static aberrations are observed between the measured wavefronts from the LGS wavefront sensor (WFS) and the natural guide star WFS. We model these LGS aberrations. c © 2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (010.1080) Adaptive optics;(010.7350) Wave-front sensing.
